Notice from Victoria Beckner (Presson)

I am the widow of Eastern Pilot, Gerald V Presson, who passed 9/26/1976.

When contacting the PBGC about my own Eastern Pension, they said I likely was eligible for my husband’s Eastern pension as we were married at the time of his death. He had 10 years and 3 months service with the Company, and thus was vested.

After a 1 hour interview with the PBGC, I was told the PBGC would research the matter and respond within 12 months.

I got ALPA, my Congressman Curt Clawson and Senator Bill Nelson in on the situation.

I received a phone call from my Congressman’s office telling me that I would receive a letter stating no benefits would be paid. Because Gerry passed away before the Retirement Equity Act of 1984, which provided for surviving spouses to claim a share of their spouse’s pension, the finding was that the PBGC had no obligation.  The PBGC told the Congressman’s staff member that the Collective Bargaining Agreement in place at that time specifically denied benefits to any pilot’s survivors if the pilot was less than 50 years of age at the time of death.

I am seeking any information anyone has about this Collective Bargaining Agreement and anyone with knowledge of spouses whose claims of pensions were honored and also those whose claims were not honored.

As my husband would have been eligible to begin retirement on 12/15/1996, this claim denial could be important to myself and others. I also have no idea if the pension accrual amounted to much. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Victoria Beckner (Presson)

Additional Message on the Crash of Eastern Flight 980 video

We received a request from Eastern Radio Show host Captain Neal Holland (REPA Member) to send the below message...

Jim Holder

To All Radio Show Website Members

Eastern Flight 980 Video has been an instant success. Within 48-hours of putting the Video on the website it has had over 310 views.

This is a very important video made by Mr. Ray Valdes of the climb up Mt Illimani, Bolivia to see the crash site and wreckage of Flight 980. We hope it will be the impetus of a complete and thorough investigation as to the cause of this tradegy.

Consider that no bodies were recovered and no "black" boxes were found even though the section of the aircraft that housed these recording devices was exposed.

Lots of questions need to be answered that the Federal government and Eastern were unwilling to provide about this great tradegy. If you want to help in getting answers please let us know.

Request about certain Eastern DC-3/C-47 Aircraft

We just received the below request from Mr. John Scott... Anyone with any knowledge about these aircraft can contact him at the Email address below his name...

Jim Holder

Dear Captain Holder,

I am afraid that due simply to the passage of time, the information I am seeking may no longer be "available".
As I am sure you know Eastern Air Lines operated a sizable fleet of DC-3 aircraft until 1952.  The DC-3 on a whole came in 3 varieties: The DC-3 (Wright 1820 engine powered), the DC-3A (Pratt & Whitney 1830 engine powered) and the C-47 (military cargo Pratt & Whitney powered).

Eastern Airlines standardized their fleet with the DC-3 (Wright powered) models.  The exceptions being three C-47's - two acquired in 1945 and the third acquired in 1949.  By all indication these aircraft were used only in a cargo role.
I have been able to trace post Eastern Air Lines history on two of the three aircraft.  I have not found any pictures of any of the three in Eastern service.  So to my request...

Could you put out to REPA members and any other contacts you may have (maintenance?) a request for a) pictures of the C-47's in Eastern service or b) a verbal description of the appearance of the aircraft i.e. were they painted in full Eastern livery.
These three aircraft were registered N15573, N88808 and N88809.

For your information see the Eastern Airlines fleet list and several Eastern Air Lines DC-3 pictures.
